News Article:
The flood situation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has shown signs of improvement as water levels began to recede on Tuesday, following days of heavy rainfall that inundated several areas. Both state governments have intensified their relief operations in the affected regions, with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy personally visiting flood-hit areas to assess the damage and ensure that aid reaches those in need.
In Telangana, CM Revanth Reddy held a review meeting at the Mahabubabad district Collectorate, where he instructed officials to prepare detailed reports on encroachments on water bodies, including lakes, across the state. This move aims to address the root causes of flooding and prevent future incidents.
Despite the severity of the situation, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy announced that the floods in Telangana do not meet the criteria to be declared a "national calamity" as requested by the state government. However, he assured that the Central Government would provide all possible assistance. He advised the Telangana government to utilize the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for immediate relief efforts and mentioned that additional funds would be allocated after central teams assess the damage. The Telangana government has already announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in rain-related incidents.
The Telangana government has also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the flood-affected areas and assess the damage firsthand. The state estimates that the floods have caused over ₹5,000 crore in damages and has requested an immediate ₹2,000 crore in aid from the Centre.
In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed state officials to intensify their relief efforts, particularly in Vijayawada, which has been severely affected by the unprecedented rainfall and flooding. Although floodwaters are gradually receding, rescue and relief operations continue, with around 60 to 70 of the 100 affected colonies still waterlogged.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been actively involved in the relief operations in Vijayawada, deploying six Mi-17 helicopters and two Chetak helicopters to distribute essential supplies in the region. Additionally, the IAF has delivered 50,000 kg of relief materials to the NTR District.
