Rahul Gandhi Keen on AAP-Congress Alliance in Haryana Polls: Sources
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has expressed interest in
forming an alliance between his party and the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi
Party (AAP) for the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls on October 5, sources
revealed to India Today TV.
Key Highlights:
- Haryana
Congress leaders' opinions sought on an alliance with AAP.
- Congress
and AAP previously contested Lok Sabha polls together in several states.
- Arvind
Kejriwal and Kumari Selja had earlier ruled out the possibility of a
Congress-AAP alliance.
During a meeting of the Congress's Central Election
Committee (CEC) held on Monday, Rahul Gandhi, who also serves as the Leader of
Opposition in the Lok Sabha, discussed the potential alliance with AAP for the
Haryana elections. He sought the opinions of Haryana Congress leaders on this
matter, according to sources.
In the past, the Congress and AAP have collaborated in
the Lok Sabha polls in states such as Haryana, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, and
Chandigarh. However, just last month, senior Congress leader Kumari Selja
dismissed the possibility of an alliance with AAP for the Haryana Assembly
polls, asserting that Congress is a strong player in the state and would
contest the elections independently.
Earlier this year, AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal also announced that his party would contest all 90
seats in the Haryana Assembly on its own strength.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that former Haryana Chief
Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda may be fielded from his stronghold in Garhi
Sampla-Kiloi, while state Congress chief Uday Bhan could contest from Hodal.
