Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was arrested by the CBI on Monday, following a probe into alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. Ghosh, along with three others—Biplav Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan—was taken into custody after being questioned by the central agency for over two weeks.

The CBI's investigation also included a polygraph test for Ghosh. The agency has charged him with criminal conspiracy, cheating, dishonesty, and violations under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, all of which are non-bailable offenses.

Ghosh had resigned as principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on August 9, 2023, a case that led to widespread protests and unrest across West Bengal. The CBI took over the investigation into the rape-murder case from Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) after the Calcutta High Court's directive.

The investigation also revealed a video of Afsar Ali Khan, Ghosh's alleged bodyguard, threatening a former principal of the hospital. The former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar hospital, Akhtar Ali, had earlier accused Khan and others of involvement in selling bio-medical waste products and other financial irregularities at the hospital.
