A 32-year-old journalist named Sarah Rahanuma was found dead in a lake in Dhaka, Bangladesh, early Wednesday, shortly after she made two cryptic posts on Facebook. Rahanuma, who was a newsroom editor at a Bengali-language news channel, was discovered in Hatirjheel Lake by a passerby who pulled her body from the water and rushed her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where she was declared dead on arrival around 2 a.m. local time.
Inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of the hospital police outpost, confirmed her death and the recovery of her body, according to local reports.
Just hours before her death, Rahanuma made two unsettling posts on Facebook on Tuesday night. The first, posted at 10:24 p.m., was in Bengali and read: "It is better to die than to live a life corresponding to death." The second post, made at 10:36 p.m., featured photos of her and a man named Fahim Faysal, both wearing bandannas of the Bangladesh flag, and tagged him in the post. The location showed as Dhaka University.
In her second post, Rahanuma wrote, "It was nice having a friend like you. God bless you always. Hope you'll fulfill all your dreams soon. I know we had lots of planning together. Sorry, can't fulfill our plans. May God bless you in every aspect of your life."
An hour later, at 11:25 p.m., Faysal commented on her post, pleading with her not to harm herself: "You're the best friend I've ever met, don't ruin this friendship! Don't do any harm to yourself." His comment has sparked concern and raised questions about her state of mind before her death.
Rahanuma’s husband later stated that they were considering separation, adding another dimension to the tragedy.
