India’s top prosecution body, the UP Police, days after a 16-year-old said that she had been raped in a car that momentarily stopped on a street and continued moving when she resisted, said the child’s complaint – filed following the incident by her mother, known for her activism in fighting for women’s rights – was part of a plan to falsely incriminate the accused. The young girl, a Jhansi resident, had said that she was kidnapped and raped in a moving car by some men in a white vehicle, whom she claimed had left her on the street, before speeding away.

A 16-year-old girl claimed that three ‘miscreants’ from her neighbourhood picked her up in a car at around 6am on Tuesday and took her to a highway where she was raped by two of them.

But applying the theory of CCTV, police said no such crime was found when they reviewed the footage, and that it backed up the accounts previously stated by men involved. The police found out that the young woman, her aunt and aunt’s son colluded to create the so-called story as blackmail to extract money from the three men they had an old dispute over.

The case took an unusual turn once the family’s claim was examined. The victim first alleged that she was kidnapped from her porch by two men in a white car. But CCTV footage near her residence showed no such car – only the victim seen on a walk. ‘Getting the entire country to notice a little girl’s restlessness saves her’ Now the investigating team was certain the girl required medical help. ‘Her claims were not adding up – it was clear this was not a case of trafficking, but a mental health issue,’ Jhansi’s senior superintendent of police Rajesh S explained.

Police checked around 50-60 CCTV cameras in the area, he said.

The girl ran away with a boy. She went to that boy and got married The girl wanted to run away with a boy and get married; she was waiting for the boy in the fort.

But if he doesn’t show up, she’ll go to my aunt’s home’ he explained, adding that they and his aunt’s son set a trap for the neighbours.

The Police have also said that the girl later confessed that she made the story up to accuse the boys. A case has been registered against the girl under section 22 of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and her family has been taken into custody.
