Pipeline burst in Powai

Pipeline burst in Powai, water supply in areas under 4 wards to be affected

One of the five main pipelines bringing water into the city from Tansa lake, one of the seven lakes feeding Mumbai, had sprung a gigantic leak.

BMC said the leakage came to their notice at 3.30pm in Powai and valves were closed to stop water from getting wasted.

One of the key water pipelines supplying water from the Tansa lake in Powai burst on Friday, and water supply to several locations across four municipal wards in the city will remain affected till Saturday.

Those scheduled for water disruptions are Dharavi, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Andheri East, Vile Parle, Bandra (East) including Bandra Terminus, and Santacruz.

In a press note issued on Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) says of the five days: ‘In some wards the water supply pressure is likely to be less whereas in some places the water supply will be completely stopped.’

The pipeline burst, which took place in Powai at around 1.30pm, has ensured that the valves shut down immediately to prevent wastage of water.

Video and picture excerpts that have been issued across social media expose heavy flows of water spewing forth from the leakage outlet of the main pipeline.

The repair work is ongoing. Blocked valves have forced us to cut off water supply to save it from percolation. A shortage of water is being felt in four municipal wards since the works started,” the official said, adding that work is going on war footing and continuing for the next 24 hour.

Tansa is one of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai.

June 2018: Mumbaikars grapple with the extremely hot summer where temperatures range between 34°C and 37°C. During this heat wave, the power supply suddenly goes out in Shahu Nagar, Mankhurd, a populated area in Mumbai. Soohan Mona, a 13-year-old resident, suggests that couples engage in sexual activity as a way to cope with the oppressive heat. Thus, the young woman frames the reality of hot-weather sex from her own perspective and crafts a fictional narrative from the confusion of a power outage, using real world references. The absurdity of her statement catches the attention of passersby who quickly spread the story. The incident was reported widely and unsubstantiated by the local media.

No translation notes or a phone directory for local names or terms are provided to help those who may not understand the language in which the details are filled in. Just as it’s important for resident Indians to be able to drive in India on to its roads, it’s equally necessary for them to be able to read these signs. Both fields must be completed, and errors are not tolerated. A recent story on the BBC news website illustrates the significance of visibility. In an area where the police, for lack of a more accurate term, are likened to terrorists and much of the signage is in Arabic script or Quranic couplets (“God’s relationship with Muhammad is infinitely entwined, as intricate as the blossom in midsummer”), hockey posts have become a malevolent force. Six children, ages eight to 10, who chose to play in the English cemetery rather than on the hockey pitch, were accidentally struck by a stray ball. According to informed sources, five children passed away from their injuries.
